CITYSCAPES
Owner: Brian O'Conner. This a Greek village that Brian and his family
visited on their vacation. As well as buildings, Jonny enjoys painting boats and water.
|
Owner: Stephan Veuilleux. Steph has quite a large livingroom and needed something
big to fill the space. Jonny doesn't often paint such large paintings as they are difficult and long to complete, but every now and again
they he does one for the challenge. This painting was done at his new Studio in Kanata.
|
Owner: Heather Boyer of Windsor, Ontario. This paiting depicts
how our planet has been overcome by the built environment in the past one hundred years. Influenced by Van Gogh's
Starry Night, this picture was originally not one of Jonny's favorites, but later became very important to him.
|
Owner: Hummingbird Music of Nepean, Ontario. This
painting was the first of the bendy building series to hold the foreground instead of having a
perspective depth. Some of the shapes shown are sidewalks and a door.
|
Owner: Brady Moffat, Ottawa, ON. Brady owned the Elbow Room where Jonny regularily had many of his paintings on display in 2003.
|
Owner: Stephan Veilleux, Orleans, Ontario.
This particular painting is a cousin of 'Doorway'. It marks Jonny's first painting after his three year break.
The birth of his daughter Gina kept him occupied for a while, and his small apartment offered little room for
a painting studio, but now that Jonny has moved into a new house in Kanata, he has lots of room to paint.
|
Owner: Jason Billows. This is one of Jonny's most popular paintings. The first bendy building picture appeared at the Downstairs Club.
The owner had some crooked doorways and bright primary colours so the bendy buildings image was
painted to go along with the decorum in the bar. We live in a world of straight lines, yet our lives
never seem to go straight. Maybe that's why the bendy buildings have so much appeal.
|
Owner: Anonymous. Jonny visited Amsterdam
with his family in 1984. The Olsen family lived in France in 83 and 84. They visited many European countries
in those two years. Jonny's favorite place was Amsterdam. He loved all the canals and the brown
buildings. This painting was
exhibted at the National Arts Centre on Nov 28, 2003.
|
Owner: Sarah Tessier. 4 o'clock is the time of day depicted
in this picture. The painting was given as a gift to Sarah from her best friend Cassandra Bowley, who both worked at the Elbow Room.
|
Owner: Anonymous. This one is simliar to the '4 0'Clock' painting except that the setting is 8 o'clock.
|
Owner: Anonymous. This picture was painted at
at the Studio on St. Laurent Blvd. Wouldn't it be nice if our cities were green instead
of grey, with a water fountain on every corner. The sound of running water
has definite soothing qaulities, that is why Jonny keeps a small water fountain in his studio.
|
Owner: Jen Fullerton, Ottawa Ont. Pictures are like
paintings of the past, but paintings are doorways to our dreams.
|
Owner: Jonny Olsen. This was painted in his studio on Princes of Whales Blvd. His studio was on the 16th floor. Jonny is a big fan of board games. The path in this
picture are supposed to be squares in a baord game.
|
Owner: Stephan Veilleux. Stephan, who was Jonny's roomate in Vanier in 2002 is a big supporter of Jonny's artwork.
This one is called 'Y-town' because the buildings form a Y shape.
|
Owner: Jonny Olsen. This is a place Jonny saw in his dreams, so he decided to paint it. It would be a fun place to live. This is the first time he added
the bendy feature to the road as well as the buildings. It gives the painting a fish-eye feel.
|
Owner: Derek Thuillard. Jonny is a big fan of the famous artist Escher and his stairs, so he decided to make his own painting with lots of stairs.
|
This mural, painted at the Elbow Room on Elgin Street, was intended to give the room some depth and make it seem as though the room continues on into a
courtyard. L'accoudoir is a French word for 'closet' which the Elbow Room can seem like at times.
|
Owner: Jonny Olsen. This painting was for a long while owned by Cindy Graman, who Jonny rented studio space from in 2002. But the painting no longer
fit in Cindy's house when she moved so she gave it back to Jonny. The painting depicts the wonderful stairway fronted buildings of Montreal.
|
Owner: Jason Watts. Jason was part of Jonny's band Junkyard Symphony. He was a DJ/drummer and was part of Junkyard Symphony's 'Planet Junk' project
which created hip-hop music.
|
Owner: Patrick Michaud of Quebec City. Patrick has been Jonny's friend since the late 90's when they met at the Tulip Festival. Jonny was performing with Junkyard Symphony and
Patrick was running a fire safety show. The painting is hanging in Patrick's kitchen.
|
Owner: Anonymous. This painting hung in Jonny's small one bedroom apartment in China town. When he moved to the basement
apratment on St. Laurent in Vanier he unfortunatley had to sell the painting.
|
Owner: Dave Olsen. Jonny played percussion with his guitarist friend Dave Milliken every Thursday night at the Elbow Room in a Group called
Namaoke, meaing 'to sing along with a live band'. Volunteers sang and got to show off their stuff
to a selction of 400 songs.
|
Owner: Anonymous. To make the bendy building series a little more interesting, Jonny decided to include famous cities
from around the world. This painting was appraised by a European art critic at ten times the price
it was sold for.
|
Owner: Stephenie Lauzon. Another version of the
Bendy buildings picture, this one has the street light on the green building instead of the yellow
one.
